Library Book Assignment

Library Book Assignment

Part I

1. I chose my book because I find psychology and the human mind very interesting. I have been also considering switching my major from Mass Communications to Psychology and I thought this would be a resourceful option.
2. One author: Adam Morton
3. "Emotion and Imagination"
4. Printed by Polity Press in both the UK and the USA
5. Printed at Polity Press Malden, MA and Polity Press Cambridge, UK in 2013 (I lucked out with the date)

Part II

This book was published in both the United States and the United Kingdom at different branches of Polity Press. The publication date of this book was in 2013 and is copyrighted by the author Adam Morton. This book covers Morton's own extensive research of the connection of human emotions and imagination. It discusses in depth the way humans develop emotions through imagined scenarios and images in their heads. As Morton simply states in the book "Imagination shapes emotion." (Morton, 207) Emotion only comes from the things we see and create in our minds. It is a philosophical approach to what humans can or can not control emotionally.

Research Tips and Tutorials

Research Tips and Tutorials

This link on the library website was extremely resourceful. It offers plenty of pointers for the usually difficult tasks when writing papers. It is definitely something I can see myself using this with future projects. Not only does this resourceful link help one to research a project but it helps find a topic in the first place. I am an extremely indecisive person when it comes to anything so I personally could get many benefits from this. It provides links to scholarly articles and books which is much more credible when citing a paper than an internet-based source. If one were to choose to cite a website this guide actually tells you how to make sure it is reliable and/pr resourceful. This is something I most definitely will be using in my future assignments.
Last but not least it informs one on how they would go about citing a paper in both APA and MLA formats. Which is something I know many students have troubles with. In the past I have found myself searching on the internet how to properly cite my work. Very useful, I wish I had known about it sooner!

Chapter 4 Summary and Analysis

MaryJean Hemp , Abdulaziz Aldawihis, Jaffar
Summary:
In chapter 4 Conor returns to Nepal with intentions of finding the seven children he cared for before.  As he enters Godwari, where his Nepal life began, he describes the climate as different now, not as hot and desert –like and more foggy and wet. When he first arrives to the orphanage he runs into Nishal and Hriteek who excitedly greet him and deliver the news of his arrival to the rest of the children who are equally as ecstatic.  The children immediately ask Conor of his love life and he conceals from them that he has entertained the idea of finding love with a Nepali woman. The children don’t understand that American marriages hold different standards, in that there is no need of approval from the parents of the couple. Conor’s first move of action is to search for answers by calling anyone he can think of from his last time there.  He told people of the seven missing children from Humla and his hopes of finding them.  Many responded hopelessly, children were either dying or going missing every day and no one wanted to tell him that this could be the case. Conor met with Viva and Jacky of the Umbrella foundation for the first time who also had sodden hopes of Conor finding the children, but offered to take them in if he did indeed succeed in finding them.  They then directed him to Gyan from the Child Welfare Board, who in turn becomes one of Conor’s greatest friends.  Gyan immediately greets Conor with warmth and understanding and from there they begin the search together. After Conor becomes frustrated with Gyan for not being as hands on with the search as he’d like him to be, Gyan brings Conor to an illegal orphanage in a town near by. When they arrive they are greeted by a woman at the door, whom is immediately terrified to see Gyan, because of his area of work she knows that he could get the home into very much trouble. Conor and Gyan enter the illegal orphanage to find many starving children, none of which Conor could recognize. Gyan urges them to move on as Conor struggles to leave without helping them.  Along the way Conor is informed that Amita has been found near one of Golkka’s homes and he and Gyan rescue her and send her in a taxi back to the Umbrella Foundation. Soon after Conor discovers that two of the seven children, Narin and Dirgina, are sick from malnourishment in the hospital. Conor decides to go and stay with the children in the hospital they were being treated at and then stays with them until they are well enough to leave. Back at the Umbrella Foundation Conor meets 14 year old Jagrit. Conor admires Jagrit for his wit and intelligence,  and gets to know him well due to his outstanding English. At this point in time, five of the seven children have been located. But Conor soon discovers that Kumar has been sold as a servant. After many phone calls Kumar is found by Viva.  By November 2006 Conor raised $6000 over in the US. With that money Conor and the children find an ideal home near the other Umbrella homes and an apartment for himself near by it. The chapter concludes with Liz confirming that she is going to visit Conor and the children when she travels to India. Conor, ecstatic begins to plan furnishing the rest of his home.

Breakdown:
-Conor returns to Nepal

-Begins to search for the seven missing children of Humla

-Meets with various people, including Viva and Jacky of the Umbrella Foundation

-Meets Gyan and begins the mobile search

-Eventually overtime finds all seven missing children in various locations across Nepal

-Purchases a spacious home for children of the Umbrella Foundation

-Moves into his own apartment

-Liz confirms that she is going to come visit

Analysis:
Conor showed persistence and true compassion in this chapter.  He did not give up on finding these children and that is something that he probably didn’t know he was capable of.  As he stated in chapter one he didn’t even know if he wanted children one day.  The experience of this for Conor slowly but surely made him a more selfless individual. For example, one day Conor went to his computer to post about his experience and do his usual daily routine. When he arrives to his desk he finds that his computer has gone missing.  Conor panics, all of his findings, research, emails, every thing he has

Writing Development- Group Discussion

Group 7: Abdulaziz, Almoutasem, MaryJean
We will be discussing the writing development of a paper.
Basically, we are breaking it down into three important parts. They are as follows:
1. Introduction
2. Thesis Statement
3. Conclusion
These are the three most important parts when writing an essay.
Introduction:
The introduction is what captures the attention of the audience, the thesis describes what the essay is going to be about, and the conclusion sums up the essay and everything that it covered.
When writing an introduction one needs to be sure that it is going to accurately cover what is going to be discussed in the following paragraphs. The introduction can start with a broad statement or it could even ask a question about what the overall essay will be. For example, let's say you're going to be writing an essay on how to travel affordably and you want to start with a question rather than a statement, one could begin with "Has money ever stopped you from traveling to the places you've always wanted to see?".  Now let's say that you would rather start with a statement, an example of this would be "Many people today would like to travel but can't always afford it". The introduction is what is going to spike the reader's interest, whether they can relate or not. An introduction is what gets the reader's attention. It provides the core information of what your essay is about. It should be interesting enough to hook the reader and should lead them into the general thesis.
Thesis:
Which brings us to the thesis statement. The thesis is one sentence towards the end of your first paragraph and will explain what the essay is about and how it's going to cover that topic. A thesis isn't necessarily a fact or an opinion but the writer's own angle of the discussed topic. The thesis is a "road map" of what the essay will be. It is the overall interpretation of the topic discussed, not just the topic itself. Because a thesis is so crucial to an essay's construction it must be well thought out and may or may not be one of the last things you write. It needs to accurately cover all arguments written about. It is okay to change your thesis later on if your paper takes a different direction after you've written it. Make sure that your thesis doesn't leave any "open ended" questions. When writing a thesis clarity is crucial. This is an example of a thorough thesis from http://writingcenter.unc.edu/handouts/thesis-statements/ :"While both sides fought the Civil War over the issue of slavery, the North fought for moral reasons while the South fought to preserve its own institutions."  According to the same website an idea of a poor thesis on the same topic would be something like this "The North and South fought the Civil War for many reasons, some of which were the same and some different." One thesis is just a statement whereas the other is the approach to the statement.
Conclusion:
The conclusion can be found at the end of an essay. It summarizes the essay and provides the writer's final say on the issue or topic. Many feel that they don't have much more left to say by the time of their conclusion, but it is crucial to giving the final impression. The conclusion can be the most difficult part of writing a paper or essay because it can feel repetitive and can be hard to rephrase. Like the thesis it has to be interesting and well thought out. It should summarize the theme. Try to avoid cliche beginnings to your conclusion, such as "in conclusion", "concluding","in summary", etc. Avoid bringing up anything that should be in the body of the paper like evidence or citations. The conclusion should be strictly about the topics discussed.

Little Princes initial and later reasoning

Pages 6 and 7

I believe that Connor Grennan's initial reason for going to Nepal was to try something new and with good intentions of helping out in a third world country. After years of working in Brussels and Prague he also wanted to do something selfless and immerse himself in a completely different culture. He had nothing tying him down when he made the concious decision to volunteer in an orphanage. He was not married and had no specific plans of becoming a father, and this is why he decided to take such a plunge.

Pages 53-55

In these pages Connor is bidding goodnight one last time to the children he has been caring for in the orphanage. All along he had planned to leave for home on the date he originally set for departure, but as the children begged him for an answer of when he would return he began to doubt his decision to leave at all. He was told not to give the children any one answer of his return but after a harsh realization that he would no longer be seeing them on a daily basis, he confirmed with them that he would be back in a year.

Peer Evaluation

Seperate Sheet

I thought the top 3 posts were written by Valerie Mattson, Grant Schow and Adam Block. This is simply because their writing had little grammatical errors, but there were many others that had plenty of interesting details and kept me intrigued throughout reading them. This evaluation breaks down to grammar and punctuation only.
My name is MaryJean Hemp but people that I know call me M.J. I am from Little Falls, MN just 30 miles north of St. Cloud, but my parents grew up in Edina, MN which was where I lived for the first part of my life. I consider my mom's house and my house in St. Cloud both home. I have 3 younger siblings; 1 brother who is 15 and 2 sisters who are 13 and 11. My family is the most important part of my life. My favorite food in the entire world would have to be just plain cheese pizza, even though I'm the world's least picky eater and love trying new things. My favorite place I have ever vacationed would be California, and I intend to actually move there one day. I've never been to Florida but I am saving up to go this year on Spring Break with my roommates, only because it is has been highly recommended to me. My friends are a very important part of my life and I have been blessed with some of the greatest. I love music, basically anything besides rock. I am a hostess and soon to be server at Boulder Tap House in St. Cloud. I don't plan to stay in St. Cloud for the rest of my life and would like to transfer after this year to somewhere in the Twin Cities, but we will see how that actually works out. I guess what is important to me and what I want out of life is to travel and live somewhere largely populated and urban like Minneapolis, New York, Los Angeles, etc. because I believe there are more opportunities in those places, in every aspect of life. I believe if you dream it you can do it and that's what I plan to do!
