Summary:
In chapter 4 Conor returns to Nepal
with intentions of finding the seven children he cared for before. As he enters Godwari, where his Nepal life
began, he describes the climate as different now, not as hot and desert –like and
more foggy and wet. When he first arrives to the orphanage he runs into Nishal
and Hriteek who excitedly greet him and deliver the news of his arrival to the
rest of the children who are equally as ecstatic. The children immediately ask Conor of his
love life and he conceals from them that he has entertained the idea of finding
love with a Nepali woman. The children don’t understand that American marriages
hold different standards, in that there is no need of approval from the parents
of the couple. Conor’s first move of action is to search for answers by calling
anyone he can think of from his last time there. He told people of the seven missing children
from Humla and his hopes of finding them.
Many responded hopelessly, children were either dying or going missing
every day and no one wanted to tell him that this could be the case. Conor met
with Viva and Jacky of the Umbrella foundation for the first time who also had
sodden hopes of Conor finding the children, but offered to take them in if he
did indeed succeed in finding them. They
then directed him to Gyan from the Child Welfare Board, who in turn becomes one
of Conor’s greatest friends. Gyan immediately
greets Conor with warmth and understanding and from there they begin the search
together. After Conor becomes frustrated with Gyan for not being as hands on
with the search as he’d like him to be, Gyan brings Conor to an illegal
orphanage in a town near by. When they arrive they are greeted by a woman at
the door, whom is immediately terrified to see Gyan, because of his area of
work she knows that he could get the home into very much trouble. Conor and
Gyan enter the illegal orphanage to find many starving children, none of which
Conor could recognize. Gyan urges them to move on as Conor struggles to leave
without helping them. Along the way
Conor is informed that Amita has been found near one of Golkka’s homes and he
and Gyan rescue her and send her in a taxi back to the Umbrella Foundation.
Soon after Conor discovers that two of the seven children, Narin and Dirgina,
are sick from malnourishment in the hospital. Conor decides to go and stay with
the children in the hospital they were being treated at and then stays with
them until they are well enough to leave. Back at the Umbrella Foundation Conor
meets 14 year old Jagrit. Conor admires Jagrit for his wit and
intelligence, and gets to know him well
due to his outstanding English. At this point in time, five of the seven
children have been located. But Conor soon discovers that Kumar has been sold
as a servant. After many phone calls Kumar is found by Viva. By November 2006 Conor raised $6000 over in
the US. With that money Conor and the children find an ideal home near the
other Umbrella homes and an apartment for himself near by it. The chapter
concludes with Liz confirming that she is going to visit Conor and the children
when she travels to India. Conor, ecstatic begins to plan furnishing the rest
of his home.

Analysis:
Conor showed persistence and true compassion in
this chapter. He did not give up on
finding these children and that is something that he probably didn’t know he
was capable of. As he stated in chapter
one he didn’t even know if he wanted children one day. The experience of this for Conor slowly but
surely made him a more selfless individual. For example, one day Conor went to
his computer to post about his experience and do his usual daily routine. When
he arrives to his desk he finds that his computer has gone missing. Conor panics, all of his findings, research,
emails, every thing he has
